Las Vegas UG This week

What a fun week we have tuned up for the folks in Las Vegas.  It is the first full week of January and there is this huge convention going on near the strip.  And as timing would have it, this week is also the perfect time to have our User Group meeting.

What major conference is going on this week you ask?  Why it is time for 200,000 people to invade the strip, all of the major convention centers (well nearly all of them), and every last hotel room (as seen by the tripling in price for hotel rooms starting Tuesday Night – unless you go to the Cosmo where the room rate increased 20x this week).  That conference happens to be CES (Consumer Electronics Show).

If you happen to be in town for CES, live here in Vegas or are just in town this week, we invite you to come join us at the Las Vegas UG meeting on Thursday.

January SQL Invite

We have the full details for the meeting on our meetup site (  This month we have an interactive session where Wayne Sheffield will walk you through some nifty tips and tricks for Management Studio.  Read the full details on the meetup site and come visit us in person or via our livemeeting.  We’d love to see you.

We are swapping presenters this month at the chance to have a presenter in person.  Randy Knight will be in the area and has asked to be able to present.  Thanks to Wayne for being understanding.  Please check the meetup site for more details.

SQL Server UG in Vegas August 2014 Meeting

Another Great meeting and topic is coming to the folks in Las Vegas.  This month we have had the luck of finding Mike Fal (blog | twitter) step up and fill our speaker void.

Yes, it happens to be the second Thursday of the month already.  Being that time of month, the SQL Server UG of Las Vegas will be meeting at the Tahitti Village Resort and Spa to take in some great info on SQL Server and Powershell.

You can read the information about the meeting on our Meetup page here (  Or you can continue reading this page.

Improving Database Restores with Powershell

Database restores are a key function of any database administrator’s job. However, it can be an extremely time consuming task to sort through your backups, find the right files, and then get your database up and running. In an emergency this will have a disastrous impact on your Recovery Time Objective(RTO) and lead to the dreaded angry-CTO-in-your-cube effect. By leveraging some easy-to-use Powershell scripts, you can avoid the second disaster and the pain that comes with it. By attending this session, you will understand how you can use the Powershell automation framework for database restores, see scripts that will let you restore faster, and learn techniques to extend these tools for migrating data and testing backups.

Mike Fal is a musician turned SQL Server DBA, with 10+ years of experience as a database administrator. He has worked for several different industries, including healthcare, software development, marketing, and manufacturing and has experience supporting databases from 1 GB to 4 TB in size. Mike received his a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1996 and has been caught playing trombone in public on more than one occasion.

Are you ready for some SQL?

If you are like me, you are probably almost always ready for some SQL.  Well, we have just what you are hungry for – more SQL.

Thursday evening we have the distinct pleasure of having Bob Hovious present to the Las Vegas SQL User Group.  If I am not mistaken, this is his first time presenting to a SQL audience outside of a work setting.

Bob is going to try and teach us about good design and proper datatype use.  I think many a data professional could highly benefit from this type of presentation.

As usual, we will have the presentation available for those interested in showing up in person as well as those who can only attend via the virtual world.

Here are the details on how to attend.

With the Move to Meetup, All of the Meeting information (abstract and bio) is posted there.

After a whirlwind of last minute changes last month, we expect stability this month with the monthly meeting.

Meeting Time is 6:30PM PST

Erika Bakse (blog | twitter) has been gracious to us by allowing us to pre-empt her last month and then to come back and speak to us this month.

Erika will be presenting on Clever Queries: Crafting MDX Queries to get the Most out of SSRS.

This meeting will be available via LiveMeeting and in Person at The Learning Center.  Erika will be presenting live at The Learning Center.

Reporting Services is a powerful tool that can make designing reports a snap…most of the time. But every once in a while you have to format a report very specifically, and the data just isn’t available in the form you need it to do that.  Enter Clever Queries!  Learn about how to use named sets, dummy members, and other MDX tricks to craft your data query in a way that allows you to conquer the trickiest report layouts.

Earlier this week I announced the meeting for the Las Vegas User Group.  I blasted some of you with emails – along with people in our mailing list.  Those plans are now changed.  No longer will the group be meeting on Thursday April 14th.  Instead we will be having our meet and greet on April 12th.

This meeting change came about at the request of the Azure group at Microsoft.  They will be in town and they wanted to have a little event with our group and the .Net group in Las Vegas.  So, here are the updated meeting details for the S3OLV April 2011 Meeting.

The Microsoft SQL Azure team will be in town on Tuesday, April 12th and would like to present toS3OLV members on SQL Azure, followed by a private social event at the Eye Candy Lounge.

The evening will include an overview of SQL Azure, product demos, usage scenarios (including BI), free Azure trial passes for attendees, and a social gathering afterwards at the Mandalay Bay with free drinks and appetizers.  Come meet the team, learn about SQL Azure, and socialize, network and have fun at the private social gathering following the presentation. There will be plenty of free giveaways, a drawing for an XBOX Kinect, drinks, appetizers, and more!

Event Details:

Where: Mandalay Bay, room “Palm A”

When: 6:30-8pm (overview and demos), social gathering at Mandalay Bay “Eye Candy” Lounge immediately following (private party, must have wristband to attend)

SQL Azure is a relational database built on SQL Server technology available as a service in the cloud.  For more details, please visit

Since this event will be held in Las Vegas, it should go without saying that the meeting times are in PST.

Updated invitations were sent out to locals on the mailing list.  Also, you should have received a cancellation notice if you received the original e-vite.

We hope to see many of you there.

The Las Vegas SQL Server Users Group met on March 10, 2011.  The meeting was both virtual and in-person.  Good news – we had just about as many person attending online as we did in the meeting room.

As I had announced, we had the pleasure of listening to Glenn Alan Berry.  Glenn spoke to us about many different tips around choosing hardware for better performance.  We heard about processors, memory, servers, and storage.  We ventured a little bit into virtualization and some recommendations if you are running virtual servers as well.

This is definitely one of those presentations people should check out.  The meeting was recorded and is available online for viewing over the next year.

You can view the presentation here (  You may need to enter some information to view the meeting, but the required information will pre-populate.

One last note:  to all those that attended the meeting -THANK YOU.  I also really appreciate those who have been willing to give presentations to this group over the past year since I have been scheduling speakers for the group.

The Ides of March are upon us and that means that we have another opportunity to learn some stuff about SQL Server.  We have that opportunity because it is time for the monthly S3OLV User Group meeting.

This month, Glenn Berry of SQL Server MVP fame has volunteered to present to our group via Livemeeting.  Glenn will be teaching us how to properly Select and Size database hardware in regards to OLTP performance.  Here is the abstract for this presentation.

The foundation of database performance is the underlying server hardware and storage subsystem. Even the best designed and optimized database application can be crippled by an inadequate hardware and storage infrastructure. Recent advances in new processors and chipsets, along with improvements in magnetic and SSD storage have dramatically changed the evaluation and selection process compared to the past. Many database professionals struggle to keep up with new technology and often simply let someone else make their hardware selection and sizing decisions. Unfortunately, the DBA usually gets the blame for any performance issues that crop up later. Don’t let this happen to you! This session covers current and upcoming hardware from both Intel and AMD and gives you the tools and resources to make better hardware selection decisions to support SQL Server OLTP workloads.

We will be holding this learning opportunity March 10, 2011 between 6:30 PM PST and 8:30PST.
